¿Qué cambios experimentaría Austria ante un liderazgo ultraderechista?
–En las políticas diarias de Austria no va a influir mucho, ya que las decisiones se toman por el conjunto del Gobierno, no sólo por Norbert Hofer. Sin embargo, su victoria sí puede suponer un impacto en la política internacional. Que la extrema derecha gane terreno es una tendencia que tenemos en todo el continente, pero sería la primera vez que un representante de la extrema derecha ganase unas elecciones de este tipo. Eso sí, supone un cambio en Europa y modificaría la imagen que se percibe de Austria en el extranjero. Su perfil antieuropeísta no sería novedoso, teniendo en cuenta a otros países vecinos.
–¿La extrema derecha ha utilizado la crisis migratoria para sumar apoyos?
–Hay una mezcla de factores que han hecho que se llegue a esta situación. Está disminuyendo el empleo, la economía no está creciendo, la gente en Austria percibe más competitividad con países como Alemania y necesita cambios y reformas. A eso se le añade que hay menor confianza y credibilidad hacia la política y, sobre todo, hacia los partidos tradicionales. El gran reto es la inmigración, que ha golpeado a nuestro país de una manera muy fuerte.
–¿Qué simboliza Van der Bellen para la política del país?
–Su victoria supondría una continuidad de las políticas del actual presidente. Tiene un planteamiento más favorable en torno a la integración.

The European Union in Search of Its Own Mythology

The attractiveness of the European Union is based on its economic and social model as well as on its manifold national cultural heritage. Throughout the post-Cold War period, the EU has not actively promoted pan-European myths and struggles today with creating a cohesive and credible common narrative. In this context, the author of this Policy Brief argues that to maintain its unity amidst global instability and evolving political landscapes, the EU must develop new, meaningful myths. She discusses the characteristics of the myth-design of the Union and offers policy recommendations.
