Angesichts des anhaltenden Flüchtlingszustroms und der weiterhin schwachen wirtschaftlichen Aussichten in Europa sind die aktuellen Sorgen und Ängste vieler Menschen verständlich. Gerade die Europäische Union wird in diesem Zusammenhang – oft zu Recht – kritisiert. Ihr Krisenmanagement ist zögerlich, ihr gelingt es derzeit nicht, einheitliche Antworten auf die drängenden Fragen zu geben und Vertrauen zu schaffen, dass die anstehenden Herausforderungen auch gelöst werden können. Es häufen sich in letzter Zeit aber auch Stimmen, die gerne einem Auseinanderfallen der EU das Wort reden. Nur: Wäre ein solches Szenario wirklich erstrebenswert? Wäre es wirklich sinnvoller, wenn die 28 Mitgliedstaaten alle ihren eigenen Weg gehen, wieder unterschiedliche Währungen, Zölle und Passkontrollen einführen und ihr Staatsgebiet einzäunen? Wenn der eigene kurzfristige Vorteil wieder der Nachteil des Nachbarn und Solidarität tatsächlich ein Fremdwort wird? Bei aller berechtigten Kritik – Lust am Untergang und Panikmache sind keine guten Ratgeber und lösen keine Probleme. Viel mehr muss gerade jetzt versucht werden, mit kühlem Kopf gemeinsam diese Situation zu meistern. Genau diese Möglichkeit bietet die Europäische Union. Es liegt aber an den EU-Mitgliedern, endlich loszulegen und sich nicht zu blockieren. Denn daran hapert es momentan vor allem. Wir brauchen dringend mehr Mut und Geschlossenheit – dann werden wir auch diese schwierigen Aufgaben erfolgreich bewältigen. Nichts anderes erwarten wir uns nämlich von der Politik.

The European Union in Search of Its Own Mythology

The attractiveness of the European Union is based on its economic and social model as well as on its manifold national cultural heritage. Throughout the post-Cold War period, the EU has not actively promoted pan-European myths and struggles today with creating a cohesive and credible common narrative. In this context, the author of this Policy Brief argues that to maintain its unity amidst global instability and evolving political landscapes, the EU must develop new, meaningful myths. She discusses the characteristics of the myth-design of the Union and offers policy recommendations.
