Auf der Suche nach einem Gesamtbild der heutigen europäischen Schuldenkrise hat sich Helena Wöhl Coelho von der Deutschen Welle Brasilien am 22.09.2012 mit dem Politik- und Sozialwissenschaftler Roland Benedikter (47) unterhalten. Benedikter arbeitet als Europäischer Stiftungsprofessor für Politik- und Sozialwissenschaft am Europa-Zentrum der Stanford Universität und am Orfalea Zentrum für Globale und Internationale Studien der Universität von Kalifornien in Santa Barbara. Er war mehr als 8 Jahre lang selbst auf europäischer Politikebene aktiv, hat seit 2008 mehrere vielbeachtete Analysen zur europäischen Finanz- und Schuldenkrise sowie zum Bild Europas in der Welt veröffentlicht und im September 2012 seinen fünften Wissenschaftspreis erhalten. Benedikter gilt als ausgewiesener Kenner der europäischen Entwicklung aus internationalem und multidisziplinärem Gesichtspunkt. The European Union in Search of Its Own Mythology

The attractiveness of the European Union is based on its economic and social model as well as on its manifold national cultural heritage. Throughout the post-Cold War period, the EU has not actively promoted pan-European myths and struggles today with creating a cohesive and credible common narrative. In this context, the author of this Policy Brief argues that to maintain its unity amidst global instability and evolving political landscapes, the EU must develop new, meaningful myths. She discusses the characteristics of the myth-design of the Union and offers policy recommendations.
