GLOBSEC City Talks Bratislava 2018: Euroscepticsm in Central Europe: Threat or Business as usual?

Am 17.05.2018 fand in Bratislava die fünfte von insgesamt sieben öffentlichen Veranstaltungen im Rahmen des Europe for Citizens Projekts “Anti EU-rhetoric versus own national interests? National populism and its reception in Central Europe” statt.
Eine gemeinsame Pressekonferenz der Projektpartner widmete sich der Präsentation der wichtigsten Ergebnisse der 5-Länder-Umfragen, wobei ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf das öffentliche Meinungsbild in der Slowakei gelegt wurde. Eine ausführliche Darstellung der slowakischen Umfrageergebnisse findet sich im Bericht “Slovakia: A pro-European island in Central Europe”.
Im Anschluss daran wurde das Thema im Rahmen der GLOBSEC City Talks 2018: Euroscepticsm in Central Europe: Threat or Business as usual? von einem prominent besetzten Podium weiter vertieft. Die Veranstaltung ist als Video-Aufzeichnung hier verfügbar.

“While the political discourse in Europe is being shaped and influenced by the Eurosceptic rhetoric, the divisions within the societies continue to grow. Central Europe has not been immune to this trend – newly emerged political actors as well as more established political forces have been exploiting recent crises and turmoil both on the EU and domestic level to gain support, especially among the region’s most vulnerable groups. Why is Euroscepticism gaining ground? What damaging consequences can it have for the national interests and for the EU? Do the Eurosceptic populists pose a threat to the region? What can we do to counteract Eurosceptic attitudes and behaviour?”
An der Veranstaltung nahmen 87 BürgerInnen teil (darunter allgemeine Öffentlichkeit, Studierende, EntscheidungsträgerInnen, VertreterInnen von NGOs, Medien…)
