Panel Discussion on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Austria, Finland and Sweden joining the European Union

This year, Austria, Finland and Sweden mark three decades of their membership in the European Union. To mark this anniversary, the embassies of the three countries, together with ELIAMEP, hosted a panel discussion on 7 November at the Austrian Ambassador’s Residence in Athens.

The discussion focused on developments, challenges and perspectives of the European Union, as well as the experiences of the member states since their accession in 1995. The experts Paul Schmidt from the Austrian Society for European Politics, Tuomas Iso Markku from the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, Göran von Sydow from the Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies and Spyros Blavoukos from ELIAMEP provided nuanced assessments of key historical milestones, current political dynamics and possible future trajectories of the EU. Ritsa Panagiotou from ELIAMEP moderated the discussion and guided the exchange with targeted questions and analytical input.

The Austrian Society for European Politics extends its thanks to all contributors for their valuable insights and to the Embassies of AustriaFinland and Sweden and ELIAMEP for their constructive cooperation in organising the event.
